Episode 2 Script
Welcome to the second episode of Alabama Five. My name is Butler Cain, and I’m a Democratic candidate in Alabama’s Fifth Congressional District.
Alabama Five is a three-minute audio podcast that will feature a new episode every Monday during my 2018 campaign for Congress.
On the inaugural episode, I told you I’d discuss four of my campaign priorities during this edition. It’ll be relatively brief, but you can find all of them on my website ButlerCainForCongress.Com
Cain is spelled C-A-I-N.
Okay, let’s go!
Number 1 – Affordable and Accessible Healthcare
This is a national priority for Democrats across the country, and I agree that our nation needs solutions. There are too many people in our country, and in Alabama, who can’t afford basic healthcare needs. I support expanding affordable healthcare options and strengthening healthcare coverage for our most vulnerable residents.
Number 2 – Reduce Student Loan Debt
I’ve already received a significant amount of positive feedback for this campaign priority. No one should be burdened with decades of loan debt to earn a Bachelor’s degree. An educated citizenry is crucial to a healthy democracy, and I will promote and support efforts in Congress to create ways to reduce current student loan debt. I’ll advocate for minimizing future student debt, and I’ll explore options for fiscally responsible debt forgiveness programs.
Number 3 – Promote Career and Technical Education
North Alabama is rich with opportunities for employees who have industrial and technical training. I’m convinced that our state’s long-term success depends on having a workforce that is educated, skilled, and employment-ready. Career and Technical Education is also important for building and sustaining a strong middle class. I will actively promote initiatives that address our country’s Career and Technical Education needs. That includes training educators to teach in these programs.
Number 4 – Protect Free Expression
I spent many years of my professional life as a broadcast journalist, and I am now a professor of mass communication. The First Amendment is a cornerstone of American democracy. It guarantees us a free press and free speech. However, I am increasingly concerned about the number of elected officials from federal to local levels who show disregard for free expression and disdain for journalists in particular. I will use my position in Congress to relentlessly support free expression, and I will actively speak about why protecting free expression and promoting a free press are vital to our country’s future success.
